New dean of Student Engagement and Retention

Maddie Chalk/Editor In Chief Del Mar College underwent a school-wide reorganization of nearly every department including the offices of Student Engagement and Retention this past summer. Cheryl Gardner has spent nearly three weeks in the position of Dean of Student Engagement and Retention since taking over Sandra Valerio’s former interim title. Gardner said the position will take a little longer to get used to than usual due to the reorganization and because there was not a permanent dean in the position before her. “I didn’t come into a department that was already flowing and functioning at full capacity,” Gardner said.…

City needs to focus on state of disrepair

A beautiful and resourceful opportunity lies before us like a pearl on the flesh of an oyster. Unfortunately for the City of Corpus Christi, it seems like the pearl is imperfect and the oyster has lost its freshness and has started to stink up the place. Whether through lack of leadership or hmm, let me see, maybe…lack of leadership, this city continues to fail in climbing the ladder of success as a city that can draw people, money and retain the brightest minds it produces. One example is the beautiful wind turbines that grace our bayfront near the American Bank…

Obama promises to bring home troops

In a recent address to the nation, President Barack Obama claimed that the troops were coming home for the holidays. He readdressed the pledge he made after taking office to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. The president says by the end of the year the remaining troops, tens of thousands of them, will begin packing their gear and return to the United States. The war in Iraq will finally be over. It seems like nine years of war would have resulted in a definite result. Yes, the evil boogey man has danced at the end…

Global Warming debate continues

Sam Parris/Copy Editor Since the nineteenth century (1800s), scientists have been debating whether greenhouse gas emissions could cause climate change or “global warming”, a term that, as it turns out, was not coined by Al Gore. Since then the debate has raged on, leading to debates among politicians, world leaders, journalists, and even college and high school students. Even now as we approach the year 2012, a global warming debate has even been raised by students and faculty right here at Del Mar–even amongst the Foghorn staff ourselves.  The reality of global warming, however, can’t be easily explained in 500…

Donations To Gentry Family

On November 3, Jennifer Gentry, a Del Mar College student, and her family escaped a Rockport fire that destroyed nearly everything they owned. “I had to throw my son out of the window, and wait for them to come save me,” said Gentry. “I was nervous and didn’t know what to do.” Gentry and her family lost nearly everything they possessed, including their truck and all of their clothes. With her husband on Workman’s Comp and her having no job of her own, Gentry said that money was scarce. Although Gentry is currently looking for a job right now, a…
