Target may fall on tobacco

Vivien Sanchez Co-editor-in-chief   The Del Mar College Board of Regents, at its March 3 meeting, addressed a proposed campuswide smoking ban. The board plans an in-depth discussion of the ban, which was initially proposed in spring 2014, at its May meeting. The ban, as proposed, would prohibit the use of all tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco and e-cigarettes, anywhere on campus. Del Mar President Mark Escamilla, Ph.D., said at the March meeting that the college intends to spread word about the issue and discussion following spring break. Del Mar staff treats students to special day

  Cynthia Hagerman Reporter   Campus Dining and Student Life teamed up to host the annual Student Appreciation Day on March 11 in the Harvin Center to show Del Mar College students how much they matter. The menu included free hot dogs, chips, watermelon, lemonade and water. “Student Appreciation Day is to let the students know how much they are appreciated, and the faculty and staff enjoy the opportunity to mingle with the students to wish them a safe spring break,” said Food Service Manager Leon Rodriguez, who has been part of the event for 29 years. New rules result in changes to reporting of sexual assaults

    Dominique Presley Reporter   There has been a recent change in the law of reporting sexual assault. It has now been federally mandated that college officials have to immediately report all alleged on-campus sexual assaults to local law enforcement agencies. Before the change, victims could decide whether to involve law enforcement. This does not mean that the victim is forced to cooperate with police. Vocal Vikings team dominates at recent competitions

  Kira Hays Co-editor-in-chief   As their 2014-15 competitive season comes to an end, the Vocal Vikings made a statement at their last two tournaments. The Vocal Vikings hosted “Speech on the Beach” in the Coles Building the weekend of Feb. 27-28. Nine colleges and universities attended the tournament, which consisted of two separate tournaments, one on Friday and another on Saturday. Earning first place sweepstakes on both days, the Vocal Vikings blew the competition away. John Caceres won second and third in Poetry. Less hands on, more textbook

  Victoria Trevino Reporter   Del Mar College’s recent change to the core curriculum for degree plans, which took effect in fall 2014, has resulted in several changes in the Art Department. Students who are on the older degree plan are still able to keep their visual or performing arts course if they haven’t switched over to the new degree plan. Converting to the new degree plan ultimately means they will have to start with the new core.
