Accounting major Jose Ontiveros is ready to enter the workforce. He didn’t have to go far to explore his options as Del Mar College hosted two career fairs that brought dozens of employers to both the East and West campuses in April.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice officer showing a possible new candidate on the many areas offered in that career.
“I’m looking for a full-time job, to gain experience,” Ontiveros said at the East Campus fair April 19.
The career fairs were organized by Vanessa Adkins, DMC’s career development coordinator, who offered this advice to jobseekers: “Career readiness is career happiness.”
“The career fair is put on each semester to basically partner employers with students, alumni and the community,” Adkins said.
The fair was open to the community allowing job opportunities for everyone and anyone. Del Mar partnered with Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend to bring in employers. Adkins collaborated with Monika De La Garza, Workforce Solutions’ communications and outreach coordinator.
West Campus also held a career fair, on April 20. Both locations featured more than 50 employers each, tailored to each campus’ career objectives.
“Del Mar offers a different varieties of students,” said Lyia Calderon, human resources assistant for the Texas State Aquarium. “Knowing that Del Mar can offer that to us is what drew us here.”
