Del Mar drama department to perform “Airness”, opening night April 7

For anyone who is a fan of air guitar, the upcoming production by the Del Mar Drama Department may be just what you are looking for.

This spring, Del Mar Drama presents Chantal Marcantel’s air guitar comedy “Airness.”

Directed by former Del Mar student Derek Rhein, the story follows Nina, an aspiring air guitarist, through her journey to become the next air guitar champion. Shortly after entering her first air guitar competition, she realizes winning may not be as easy as she thinks. She befriends some charismatic nerds who, just like her, are committed fully to becoming the next champion themselves.

Follow their journey into the world of air guitar competition and see who becomes the Champion of Shred or King Shredder — not too sure what the winner is called but see who becomes the champion.

“In this comedy about competition, completion and finding the inner ‘Airness’ inside yourself, you may also find your inner ‘Airness’ along to your favorite songs and performing with raw joy,” said Carl Yowell, DMC professor of drama.

The production is rated PG-13 due to some mature content and language. Attendees can also expect smoke and strobe lighting effects.

Del Mar Drama’s production of Chantal Marcantel’s “Airness” will run for two weekends, April 7-8 and April 13-15, in the Bartlett Theatre.

Tickets are $10 general admission; $6 for seniors, military and DMC employees; and $3 for DMC students with a valid ID. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. with the Drama Box Office opening one hour prior to each performance with in-person day-of-show tickets available. Advance tickets are available online at www.delmardrama.ludus.com. Barlett Theatre is located in the Fine Arts Center on Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus on Ayers Street.

Also, for those students who are planning to attend, April 13 is Student Appreciation Night with free admission to the performance for students with a valid ID from Del Mar College, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the Corpus Christi Independent School District or from any area school district. Students need to redeem their ticket in person at the Bartlett Theatre Box Office beginning one hour before the 7:30 p.m. performance start time. Seating is limited due to the intimacy of Bartlett Theatre.
