Del Mar’s Center for Access and Advocacy hosted their 10th annual Advocate of the Year ceremony Oct. 3 at Wolfe Recital Hall on Heritage Campus. A total of eight nominees received awards for their outstanding commitment to helping students with disabilities.
Award winners were Steven Kelm, Basic Construction Safety Program with the Continuing Education Dept.; Armando Gamez, Carpentry Program with the Continuing Education Dept.; Albert Curry, Mathematics Dept.; Darrel Rees, Mathematics Dept.; Wassin Atwah, Department of Computer Sciences, Engineering and Advanced Technology; Christi Hill-Troglin Cox, American Sign Language and Interpreting Program; Jim Galvan, American Sign Language and Interpreting Program; and Linda Lugo, American Sign Language and Interpreting Program.
“Recognizing these efforts at this time of year is important because it highlights the dedication and hard work that often go unacknowledged,” said Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and Retention Elida De Leon. “Further, it encourages others to engage in similar roles, creating a ripple effect that can enhance the educational environment. Plus, it reminds students of the importance of gratitude and appreciation for those who help them along their educational journey.”
CAA holds the ceremony every October as part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The honorees received a plaque and 10-year pin at the ceremony and will have their names added to a plaque with past award winners. Del Mar students can nominate any faculty or staff member, and the nomination period runs from November to September.
“There are a handful of faculty and staff members here at Del Mar College that have always gone above and beyond for the students with disabilities, and CAA felt that it was crucial to recognize these individuals’ efforts,” Accessibility Specialist Brenda Garcia said. “This is our 10th year of recognition and look forward to many more.”
