TRIO event aims to assist first-generation college students

On Nov. 4, Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus hosted a special event in recognition of first-generation college students, organized by the TRIO and Educational Opportunity Center programs. The booth, located in the Harvin Center, offered a space for students to learn more about the resources available to them, while also celebrating their achievements.

Angela Pena, a TRIO student assistant worker and a first-generation graduate herself, assisted with the booth. Pena, who earned her bachelor’s degree in business, expressed pride in the event.

“We’re here to celebrate students who are first-generation graduates,” she explained. “It’s important for us to show that we believe in them and that they can succeed.”

Tanya Bergstrom, an academic coordinator for the TRIO program, was also present to engage with students. Providing students and staff popcorn, Bergstrom helped guide students in signing a pledge. The pledge, which students read and signed, included statements such as: “I pledge to continue to be a trailblazer for myself, my family, and my community” and “I pledge to believe in my ability to succeed.”

One of the students who participated, Madison Morales, shared her experience as a first-generation college student majoring in art.

“My parents are just happy that I am attending college. They know that whatever I am doing, I will succeed,” said Morales whose parents emigrated from Panama and do not speak English, are proud of her academic journey.

The TRIO and EOC programs at Del Mar College offer valuable support to first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students, helping them navigate their educational paths.
