Students and staff took a dose of healthy competition to the Del Mar College gym basketball court in an epic inaugural “March Madness Showdown.”
On March 27 the madness began with the free-throw contest. With sign-up open to players and fans, the competition was fierce. As the competition narrowed down to the top scorers, Andres Garcia walked away the free-throw contest champion.
“It took hard work and consistency,” Garcia said of his win.
Finally, it was time for the teams to take the court, the Helm Holders versus Valdar’s Warriors. After four quarters of friendly competition, the Helm Holders took the victory over Valdar’s Warriors.
Helping his team to victory Gabriel Franco was named MVP of the inaugural showdown. “It took great teamwork,” said Franco humbly.

Program helps with self-esteem, brain development Maria Garza / Reporter Drew Rodriguez may be new to the Master Choir, but he’s not new to singing at Del Mar College. The criminal justice major joined Del Mar College’s Children’s Choir at age 8. The program affected him a lot, he said, showing him that in the strive for perfection, help is always needed. “The program helped me with singing, communication and self-esteem,” Rodriguez said.
