Basketball participation not quite a slam dunk

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com All basketball fans should be rejoicing as we are truly in the thick of all things basketball — the NCAA Tournament is in its final stages, the NBA playoffs are right around the corner and 5-on-5 intramural basketball is here. With all this basketball going on it’s troubling that there is another drop in participation for intramurals even with the gym floor finally being finished and being put to use. Last semester only 3-on-3 half-court games were allowed because of the semi-start of rebuilding the gym floor, but there was abundance of teams ready to play. This…

Tennis players have no love for the heat

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Intramurals singles tennis tournament had a great turnout with 11 players signed up, ready to play and racquets in hand. Unfortunately time restrictions and the inability to have a second day due to several players unable to return the next day led to more of a “thanks for coming out, here’s a T-shirt” type of feel. Nonetheless the competition was highly competitive as well as very humid and hot, forcing one Gage Freeland to change from wind pants to shorts to deal with the heat. There was water and tennis racquets provided by the intramurals sports workers…

Swaggy G crowned king of intramural volleyball

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Past champions Thunder fell to second place after newcomers Swaggy G won the intramural volleyball championship game on March 2. The championship game came after a two-game winning streak by the Thunder as Swaggy G were coming off a two-game rest period. In the end, rest won over momentum. Against all odds Swaggy G player James Craig was ready for the challenge, saying: “We knew had to stay focused to help each other out because teamwork is important to win. We…

Dominic Perez dominicperez@foghornnews.com Only one day a semester, at a specific time and specific place, do you get to throw balls at people and not have anyone feel awkward about it. This semester, that meant 3:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the gym for the intramural dodgeball tournament. It started with a four-team double-elimination tournament between teams Goaty’s, Max, Roland and BDBB. The first match between Goaty’s and Team Max offered an entertaining game, as Goaty’s was able to win easily through good teamwork to corner the last player on Team Max. The next matchup between Team Roland and Team BDBB…

Team Patriots take the flag football championship

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com   The NFL season has been over for a few weeks, but intramural flag football quickly filled the void for some. Unfortunately there was not a huge turnout this semester as compared with the fall semester, when there was over eight teams playing competitively. This time around only four showed up to play, which led to several games of the same four teams over two weeks — two Del Mar teams, two from Collegiate High School. With the second college team not showing up it was determined a semifinal round between two Collegiate teams would play with the…
