Texas Poet laureate reads from new book on campus

Del Mar College is continuing its tradition of hosting a series of poetry readings and open mic nights. The first one of the season took place on Sept. 24 and featured 2008 Texas Poet Laureate Larry D. Thomas. Thomas, who shared excerpts from his new book, “As if Light Actually Matters,” during the event in the White Library, said he didn’t find poetry particularly fascinating until he was in college, at which point he felt he enjoyed it far more than he enjoyed prose. Dancing it out with the Social Dance Club

The Social Dance Club is hosting “drop-in” dance lessons, free for all Del Mar College students and faculty. The lessons, offered several Thursdays this semester, are taught by kinesiology professor Carolyn Mauck, who said she likes teaching dance because it is fun. “It’s pure pleasure of moving, interacting with someone,” she said with a smile. Mauck, who at a recent lesson wore a flowing white dress covered with pink and blue flowers, teaches all types of dance, from the salsa to the fox trot.
