Students graduate, one step closer to their dream

As she walked across the American Bank Center stage, Marissa Ramirez realized she was suddenly one step closer to her dream. Ramirez, a criminal justice major, was one of more than 400 Del Mar College students to graduate on Aug. 19. “My grandparents raised me and were an inspiration on getting ahead in life,” she said. “I’m hoping to be a lawyer and change the world in that way.” Abigail Rosales’ path wasn’t always as clear, until one day in 2008 when her brother called her and said he was going to college. “If he could, I could,” Rosales said.…

The hub becomes a sanctuary for students

For many students in need of school help or a place to work on assignments, the library isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Libraries are known for being full of books as a resource for student research, but with knowledge now at our fingertips wherever we go, they seem to lose their usefulness to some people. But the White Library not only boasts a relevant collection of information, but now there is a new and helpful lab on the fourth floor called The Hub. The Hub not only has rows of computers for student use, but also tutors…

Pens down and bottoms up

After finals are over, students and staff will appreciate a good Happy Hour. Two Foghorn staffers took on the “difficult” task of finding two options for your next Happy Hour. Celebrate the end of finals and the beginning of summer! Sarah Fecht sfecht@foghornnews.com Needing to de-stress from approaching finals is a common feeling college students are experiencing right now. For those 21 and over, happy hours provide an oasis of distracted bliss. Discounted drinks and appetizers can be enjoyed with friends and help one to stall for a few more hours on that paper that’s due in the morning. I…

Del Mar offers various summer programs for the children

To many, summer means a break from school for their kids and even themselves. The hottest season of the year is usually filled with plans and can be a fun time for the whole family. But for some, work doesn’t end and life stays as busy as ever. But rather than leaving your kids on the couch this summer, consider enrolling them in one of many programs Del Mar College has in place for children. Starting May 2, for $50, your students’ Social Security number and their report card for the year, you can begin enrolling your child in Del…

No clubs required for this round of golf

Intramurals hosted a disc golf tournament on East Campus on April 19. Targets were set up around the perimeter of East Campus and students paired off for the tournament. Fortunately for those playing, the wind was much calmer than usual that day, and few cries of “Heads up!” were heard. Foghorn staffers say their goodbyes to Del Mar College

Samantha Douty Editor-in-chief It saddens me that this is my last issue of the Foghorn. My time at Del Mar College and the Foghorn are coming to a close, but I will never forget my time here. I started at the Foghorn my first semester at DMC. I was in my mass communication class, when Robert Muilenburg offered extra credit to anyone who worked for the paper. Me, being the nerd I am, jumped at the opportunity, and I am grateful I did. I worked for the newspaper in high school and I promised myself I wouldn’t continue in…

Time to link college degree, citizenship

The topic of immigration has been an escalating issue in this year’s election between Republicans and Democrats. As the fight for the presidency continues, America is becoming more and more concerned about the topic. Some would say there already are too many illegal immigrants in this country. But the question we should be asking is, is there a way to allow immigrants working here in the United States to become eligible for citizenship faster? Can we make the process benefit both the undocumented immigrants and the country’s working class? Many already know that if one serves in the military he…
