New rules result in changes to reporting of sexual assaults

It has now been federally mandated that college officials have to immediately report all alleged on-campus sexual assaults to local law enforcement agencies. Before the change, victims could decide whether to involve law enforcement. This does not mean that the victim is forced to cooperate with police. Vocal Vikings team dominates at recent competitions

  Kira Hays Co-editor-in-chief   As their 2014-15 competitive season comes to an end, the Vocal Vikings made a statement at their last two tournaments. The Vocal Vikings hosted “Speech on the Beach” in the Coles Building the weekend of Feb. 27-28. Nine colleges and universities attended the tournament, which consisted of two separate tournaments, one on Friday and another on Saturday. Earning first place sweepstakes on both days, the Vocal Vikings blew the competition away. John Caceres won second and third in Poetry. Less hands on, more textbook

  Victoria Trevino Reporter   Del Mar College’s recent change to the core curriculum for degree plans, which took effect in fall 2014, has resulted in several changes in the Art Department. Students who are on the older degree plan are still able to keep their visual or performing arts course if they haven’t switched over to the new degree plan. Converting to the new degree plan ultimately means they will have to start with the new core. Crawfish boil to raise money for scholarships

    Samantha Douty Reporter   Del Mar College Foundation will host the seventh annual “Bernie’s Famous Crawfish Boil” on April 9. “The purpose of the boil is to raise money for student scholarships,” alumni and donor relations coordinator Sally Reigle said. “The crawfish boil last year raised $75,000.” According to Reigle, the DMC Foundation gave $1.13 million in scholarships to 994 students in 2014. “The event got its name from a trustee member, Bernie Paulson, who started the crawfish boil in his backyard,” Reigle said. “Seven years ago he gave the event to the Foundation to raise money for…

Student Success Center houses many resources

Fortunately, Del Mar College’s Student Success Center is available to help with many issues. “We are here to empower the students, and have made a commitment to help students succeed,” said SSC coordinator Eva DeLaGarza.
