But unlike other reference librarians, Berecka, who works in the White Library on Del Mar College’s East Campus, is an “accidental poet.” “I started writing poetry when I heard Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’ read to NFL highlights when I was in high school,” said Berecka, who said he read little poetry if any before that moment. “Poetry was my release and was much cheaper than therapy.” Berecka’s poetry contains stories of his childhood that are lighthearted and funny yet emotional. Scholarships can ease financial burden

  Steven Martinez Reporter   As the new semester starts to kick into high gear, the last thing on many students’ minds is how they are going to pay for their continuing education. But thanks to a wealth of scholarships and financial aid, students can easily apply for (practically) free money. “This academic year we processed and awarded over $1.3 million,” said Elsie Odon, scholarship coordinator for the DMC Center for Economic Development. Genocide exhibit on display

  Cynthia Hagerman Reporter   Del Mar College is hosting a panel exhibit titled “Prijedor: Lives From the Bosnian Genocide.” The exhibit includes posters as well as a DVD video for viewing, and is located on the third floor of the White Library on East Campus. The Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission hopes to educate citizens about the circumstances that led to the Bosnian genocide. The exhibit relates the story of genocide in the Bosnian city of Prijedor between 1992 and 1995. SGA students represent DMC at Capitol

Some 35 students, along with a handful of Regents and administration members, set out for Austin at 4:30 a.m. on a cold, misty Feb. 3 to represent the school in delivering multiple proposals. Art show to open Feb. 20

  Meagan Falcon Web editor Del Mar College’s annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show will have an opening reception on Feb. 20. This year’s show, which attracts contemporary American artists working in the drawing and sculpture mediums from across the country, was juried by Oklahoma State University professor and artist Chris Ramsay, who gave a slide lecture on Feb. 5 in Richardson Performance Hall on East Campus.
