College celebrates Hispanic heritage

Amy Foster / Reporter Del Mar College is planning several events for Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, to celebrate the diverse contributions Hispanics have made to the community and country. The U.S. Census Bureau in 2013 reported that Nueces County’s population is 62 percent Hispanic. According to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, Del Mar College consistently ranks among the top 50 community colleges in the nation granting associate degrees to Hispanic students. Annual awaited exhibition available to artists Amber Quaid / Managing editor The 49th annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show is now taking applications for next year’s show, set for Feb. 20 to May 8, 2015. The juror selected to judge the show is Chris Ramsey, an artist and an art professor at Oklahoma State University. His artwork is composed of objects that he has collected and arranged to pursue his interests in conservation, life cycles and his relationship to nature. DMC sees recent enrollment boost

Oil field, dual credit contributed to the increase By Amber Quaid / Managing editor Enrollment at Del Mar College has been on a decline since 2010, but this year shows a slight increase breaking that cycle. This year 10,746 students are enrolled, or about 200 more than last year, according to unofficial figures. Official enrollment numbers will be available after the 12th day of class. In 2010, 12,236 were enrolled, followed by a decrease in 2011 with 12,071 students, to a more than 1,000- student drop in 2012 with enrollment at 11,030. Smoking may soon be prohibited

Del Mar College students may soon be denied this privilege. On Feb. 6 the Student Government Association held a meeting in the Harvin Center where Professor Bob Long, then head of the Faculty Council, presented a Faculty Council resolution on a smoke-free campus. His resolution called for smoking areas, but the Faculty Council later voted against that plan and decided to propose a smoking ban with no smoking areas. The ban would prohibit the…
