Intramurals holding virtual events

Students have several ways to stay active The fall semester is underway, and intramurals have also made a return.  There are several virtual fitness sessions students can join. Activities include Zumba, yoga and the 100 Mile and Steps Challenge. There will be links posted for each activity at https://www.delmar.edu/offices/kinesiology/intramurals.html.  The livestream for Zumba, which began Sept. 12, is led by Coach Perla Soliz. There will be new yoga videos posted every Friday, which will be led by Kate Burrill. Drama students take fall show online

‘Black Comedy’ to debut to virtual audience Nov. 20 The Del Mar College Drama Program is moving ahead with a fall show despite the inability to use performance facilities because of quarantine procedures.  The show, “Black Comedy,” will debut Nov. 20 in front of a computer screen audience. According to drama professor Kim Frederick, rights have been approved for the farce to be broadcast over the internet. Student have until Sept. 30 to apply The Student Government Association introduced new officers and discussed what is to come for the fall semester during their first virtual meeting. Library resources still available

West Campus facility remains open for students Library resources continue to be accessible, though they are limited on a face-to-face basis. “The pandemic has thrown us a lot of struggles, but luckily there was not too much trouble since a lot of the library’s resources are already online,” said Cody Gregg, dean of Learning Resources at Del Mar College.  According to Gregg, if you are in need of a book the library will put it on reserve for you to pick up. Regents seek to fill seat following death of Gabe Rivas The Board of Regents has extended the application deadline for the District 1 seat until Sept. 22. The decision to extend the original Sept. 8 deadline another two weeks was “due to a holiday weekend, back-to-school schedules and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” Board Chair Carol Scott said in a Del Mar College press release. Group adds gift card giveaway for students The Student Government Association will have its first virtual meeting of the semester at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 16. Students will receive an invite link to the meeting via their Del Mar email addresses. Student Activity Fee funds masks, hand sanitizer

Other changes include new virtual offerings from intramural sports Students will continue to pay a $15 Student Activity Fee this semester despite most classes being online. The fee covers several student services, including providing funds to all clubs and organizations hosting events and activities during the fall 2020 semester. On-campus resources become online resources

Student support services still available despite shift to virtual learning With most classes remaining online this fall, many on-campus resources students use have also moved online. The Student Success Center (SSC), which is responsible for tutoring and helping students check out laptops and calculators through the Technology Resource Center, is closed until further notice. James turned passion for sign language into career Lucy James, professor of American Sign Language and Interpreting, is the recipient of this year’s Dr. Aileen Creighton Award for Teaching Excellence. The award is named in honor of Dr. Aileen Creighton, dean emeritus of Art and Science. Known for her dedication to higher education and students, she stood as an inspiration for her fellow faculty.
