Mariners learn safety tips

Maritime workers learned basic survival skills at Del Mar College on June 20 as part of a five-day training course. Students learned to put on immersion suits, how to enter the water properly in an emergency and other lessons in the course, which is required for all mariners. A $25,000 donation from the Port of Corpus Christi and a grant from Texas Mutual Insurance Co. covered the costs of the 15 participants taking the course. Novelist Oscar Casares reads from new book

Award-winning author Oscar Casares recently visited Del Mar College to read from his new book, “Where We Come From,” a novel about a Mexican-American family in Brownsville that becomes involved in smuggling immigrants into the United States. Casares, who was born and raised in Brownsville, also signed books during his visit, sponsored by the Mexican American Studies Program and Department of English and Philosophy on May 30 at the Center for Economic Development.
