Student Danielle Garza led the audience in DMC’s “Viking Thunder Clap,” then presented the Viking with his birthday gifts, the letters of his name in balloon form, at a Nov. 16 rally in the Harvin Center. One at a time large blue letter balloons appeared, spelling out “Valdar.” “The Viking has been a symbol of the school since 1939,” Garza said. DMC looks at degree options

myoung@foghornnews.com Del Mar College is looking into the possibility of offering as many as three bachelor’s degrees in the future. The guidelines for the college offering bachelor’s degrees were outlined by Beth Lewis, provost and vice president for academic affairs, at the Oct. 10 Board of Regents meeting. According to Lewis, the opportunity for the degrees would come from Senate Bill 2118, which was passed earlier this year. The bill gives public junior colleges the opportunity to have up to three baccalaureate degree programs for applied science, technology and nursing if they have demonstrated a workforce need. $100K to aid students

Funds go toward emergency assistance for Harvey relief More than $100,000 is available for students to get assistance with Harvey relief through the Hurricane Harvey Student Emergency Assistance Fund. Through the estate of Olga Doan, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation recently made a large donation to the student fund. “Students can use them to pay for temporary housing, medication, replacement of personal belongings or books and other academic expenses,” said Mary McQueen, Del Mar College’s executive director of development.
