Women band together for good cause

When I was 15, I remember there being a few times when I told my mom there were no more pads. She didn’t really say anything but that’s when she and I had to use toilet paper as a substitute. I thought growing up that it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But I remember this because that was one of the few times I really didn’t want to go to school.  I never chalked it up to my mom not being able to afford it, but I never thought my daughters should have to go through that. New York doing the right thing

My body, my choice! These were the words of hundreds of women on Twitter following the Reproductive Health Act that New York Gov. Andrew Cuono signed into law Jan. 23. I will start off saying I’m pro-choice — yes, your body is your body. And yes, I believe every life is a blessing. ‘Halloween’ full of twists, turns

In the newest “Halloween,” Michael Myers comes back four decades following the 1978 horror film — with complete disregard to all the movies that were in between. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode, and Nick Castle comes back as The Shape, while newcomer James Jude Courtney joins the cast. P.J. Laurie Strode waits 40 years for Michael Myers, and she has more to worry about than just herself. With daughter Karen…

Yes, yes…Oh, YES! Consent is sexy

“Shy” not being a word in Justine Shuey’s vocabulary became apparent when she joined Del Mar College students in the Retama Room on Oct. 17 for her “Fifty Shades of NO” presentation. Shuey, a board-certified sexologist who is no stranger to DMC, has presented all over the United States and Canada, educating college students on different aspects of sex. “Greatest job ever, switch majors now!” she joked with students. Just before she hit the hard facts she laid out the five circles of sexuality, the stages of the relationships, non-healthy relationship signs and what makes up a healthy relationship. She…

The flight of a lifetime

Olga E. Custodio break the gender role for future pilots “Querer es poder” (There’s a will there’s a way) are the words of Ret. Lt. Col. Olga E. Custodio, according to assistant director of history Erinn McComb in observance Hispanic Heritage Month presented by Del Mar College on Sept. 25. Always keeping those words close to mind, Custodio said she made it her mantra while she combated both gender and racial stereotypes that surrounded women and minorities as technological users. Custodio attended the University of Puerto Rico at age 16. After her father set the example of serving his country,…
