Ashley Mcbride/Staff Reporter Del Mar College recently received a nearly $250,000 grant from EDUCAUSE and the Gates Foundation, $55,000 of which went to the Biology Department for the purchase of 20 iPads to enhance learning capabilities through new technologies. Forty or so biology students were given the opportunity to participate in a national study hosted by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance. October brings flu season

TriO assists and mentors low-income students

Jackie DeLaToree / Staff Writer The TRiO is a DMC program for students that assist them with opportunities for academic development, mentoring and many other ways to encourage students to complete their college education. TRiO is designed particularly for first-generation and low-income students students and once accepted into TRiO, students can begin taking advantage of the many services the program provides. The program is national program and federally funded. Educational institutions compete for grants and DMC recently received grants through 2015. City cans crossing guards

Dina Ruiz/Staff Writer Corpus Christi crossing guards became the latest victims of budget cuts this year when the City Council recently confirmed that the Crossing Guard Program was cut from the budget and as of February 1, 2012 there will no longer be paid crossing guards in the local public school districts. Instead the city will recruit volunteers to occupy the post held by the previous crossing guard for each school. Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) and Flour Bluff (FBISD), Callalen (CISD), Tuloso Midway (T-MISD) and West Oso (WISD) independent school districts will all be affected by the cancellation.…

DMC recieves STEM grant

Eddie Puente/Associate Editor Del Mar College has recently received news that the college will receive two HSI (Hispanic Serving Institutions) Title V grants. The first grant is the HSI STEM, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Success Initiative grant totaling $869,656,000 for the first year.  This grant is scheduled for five years with a total amount of $4.34 million dollars. Student becomes local hip hop artist

New scholarship to benefit students

Aj Benavides/Staff Writer   The Future forward (F²SP) Scholarship program is currently taking applications for the fall semester at Del Mar College. The scholarship program supports at least 88 majors in science fields such as Biotechnology, Electrical engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics among others. Scholarship recipients are eligible to receive up to 3,000 dollars per semester. The way the scholarship is written, 22 students are awarded per semester. There are currently about 50 applicants for the fall semester.
