Corpus Christi Mermaids play hard

Devin Tyler/Staff Reporter DMC student Brittany Fowler can often be spotted on West Campus in a tank top on the way to her EMT class, but off campus she’s trading her tank top for football pads and a helmet. Fowler is attending Del Mar to earn her Paramedic Certification, just recently completed the Firefighter Academy and in May, Fowler joined the first Corpus Christi women’s full-contact football team, CC Mermaids. “I love sports, I’ve been involved with sports all my life,” Fowler said. Roller derby draws crowds

Maddie Chalk / Editor in Chief Corpus Christi’s newest roller derby league, the C.C. Maidens Texas Derby opened its doors seven months ago at the start of derby season. Today, this league has over 35 players that participate in practices and the games, called “bouts”, which they hold monthly. “The majority of our league is made up of volunteers: announcers, referees, and even the girls,” Announcer and treasurer, Ninah Ross said. “The dues that the girls pay, along with the proceeds from our ticket sales to the bouts help pay to rent out the Ayers Event Center and for travel…

Andrew Wilson / Graphic Designer Corpus Christi’s newest family entertainment center – opened on July 9 on the lower level of Sunrise Mall and offers different activities including, an indoor “ice-skating” rink, a laser maze, human foosball and bazooka ball. Owner Raymond Rodriguez originally wanted to build an indoor wooden maze, but because of fire code restrictions turned his attention to building a laser maze.
