Del Mar College to Launch Viking 5K run

Del Mar College’s Intramural Department is gearing up to host its first Viking Fest 5K Run on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Windward Campus.

The race will begin at 11 a.m. at the Coleman Center and is open to students, faculty, staff, and community members.

The inspiration for the event came from the success of last year’s Zombie Walk, which was held during Viking Fest and received a great turnout, according to Carla Gamez-Vela, the director of intramurals.

“This year, the Intramural team decided to take things a step further by organizing a fun and exciting race, transforming the walk into an engaging and enjoyable event for everyone,” Gamez-Vela said.

The race will include timing for those who want to track their pace, and prizes will be awarded to top finishers. Costumes are also encouraged, adding a fun twist to the event. Following the race, there will be a celebration at the finish line featuring carnival-style games, live music, and a costume contest.

According to Gamez-Vela, participants of all experience levels are welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to enjoy a casual jog, the Viking Run offers something for everyone.

“It’s a perfect opportunity to connect with others and enjoy the campus atmosphere. I hope this event becomes a long-standing tradition that encourages health, wellness, and community involvement at Del Mar College,” Gamez-Vela said.
