Obama promises to bring home troops

In a recent address to the nation, President Barack Obama claimed that the troops were coming home for the holidays. He readdressed the pledge he made after taking office to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. The president says by the end of the year the remaining troops, tens of thousands of them, will begin packing their gear and return to the United States. The war in Iraq will finally be over. It seems like nine years of war would have resulted in a definite result. Yes, the evil boogey man has danced at the end…

Global Warming debate continues

Sam Parris/Copy Editor Since the nineteenth century (1800s), scientists have been debating whether greenhouse gas emissions could cause climate change or “global warming”, a term that, as it turns out, was not coined by Al Gore. Since then the debate has raged on, leading to debates among politicians, world leaders, journalists, and even college and high school students. Even now as we approach the year 2012, a global warming debate has even been raised by students and faculty right here at Del Mar–even amongst the Foghorn staff ourselves.  The reality of global warming, however, can’t be easily explained in 500…

On November 3, Jennifer Gentry, a Del Mar College student, and her family escaped a Rockport fire that destroyed nearly everything they owned. “I had to throw my son out of the window, and wait for them to come save me,” said Gentry. “I was nervous and didn’t know what to do.” Gentry and her family lost nearly everything they possessed, including their truck and all of their clothes. With her husband on Workman’s Comp and her having no job of her own, Gentry said that money was scarce. Although Gentry is currently looking for a job right now, a…

SNAP turns against obesity

Jackie DeLaTorre / Staff Writer Food Stamps, or rather the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as renamed by the Bush Administration in 2009, has recently taken a turn down the road against obesity.  If this is the case though, the question then becomes does this give the government too much power? Today, SNAP recipients in Texas can go to any grocer in the state and pick up high sugar/fatty foods—even candy and soda—if they so choose; and as of Nov. 2010, nearly four million Texans received an average of $133.80 per person each month, according the New York Times and…

State mandates Meningitis shot

Maddie Chalk/ Editor in Chief   Recently-passed Senate Bill 1107 will now require all incoming students to any institution of higher education to receive the vaccination against bacterial Meningitis. The bill was originally approved earlier this year to only require students living in on-campus housing to receive the vaccination. However, this amendment – effective January 1 – will now include all incoming freshman and transfer students to any two- or four-year college regardless of their living arrangements. A break in enrollment for at least one semester would require the student to be re-vaccinated although students who are currently enrolled in…
