Texas History lecture to take place, will be given by Texas Historian

Loyola University professor and Texas historian Dr. Benjamin H. Johnson will give a lecture on “the stories we tell about Texas” at Del Mar on Nov. 6. The lecture begins at 6 p.m. in the Venters Business Building on Heritage Campus, Room VB100. Johnson was born in Houston and has lived here for a decade of his adult life, despite traveling abroad and across the U.S. From all these experiences, he learned the uniqueness of Texas’s mix of modern and outsized industries and communities that make Texas the state that is. “I love Texas and have spent most of my…

ALBUM ‘Man’s Best Friend’ (2025) Sabrina Carpenter Best Song: “When Did You Get Hot?” Worst Song: “House Tour” Underrated Hit: “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night” Overall: I generally did not like this album. The sound – synths, airy singing, and rhythmic choruses – is something Carpenter has been doing for a decade. And it isn’t her best work. It seems that after the success of “Short & Sweet (2024),” she’s leaning towards a more mature sound with innuendos stacked into bubbly pop. The only two songs that don’t fall into this trap are “When Did You Get Hot?”…

Del Mar Turkey Bowl is making a come back

On Friday, Oct. 24, the Del Mar College Turkey Bowl will return for the first time since 2015. It will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the Heritage Campus Kinesiology Track. Valdar’s Vikings and the Helm Holders will compete in a four-quarter flag football game to determine the winner. According to Margot Sorrell, who has served on the Turkey Bowl planning committee since the first game in 2008, the bowl has had a long history and a few different names. It began as a game between the English and Math departments and continued until 2010. Then, in 2012, it became…

Conquer the Coast bike ride hosted by United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce

On Saturday, Sept. 20, the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce held its annual Conquer the Coast bike ride in downtown Corpus Christi. Del Mar College Testing Center employee Teresa Janice, 62, competed in the race. “It was an exhausting and challenging moment for me because I had to maintain my biking endurance for more than 20 miles.   At the beginning, it was so easy, but after 10 miles, I started to feel the tiredness and soreness building up in my system,” Janice said. The bike ride has three divisions: 10 miles, 21 miles, or 69 miles. The 10-mile…

ALBUM ‘Tell Me That It’s Over’ (2022) Wallows Best Song: “Marvelous” Worst Song: “Hurts Me” Underrated Hit: “Guitar Romantic Search Adventure” Overall: A standout album from Wallows, “Tell Me That It’s Over” ranks the lowest on streaming for the indie-rock band. The album follows a similar sound to the others by this band, utilizing similar guitars and drums, while also having an interesting effect on vocals to make them sound almost fuzzy. Although the songs are easy to listen to and fun to have playing in the background, some fail to stand out against other songs of the same genre…

He didn’t play on Saturday either, but on Sunday, the Corpus Christi slammed Frisco 12-5 with one run…
