DMC student helps train others at local MMA gym

The dimly lit gym echoes with the familiar sounds of people working out. The pops of people hitting bags and pads, the struggling grunts of coaches and students grappling on the floor while having instructions called out to them.  The humid air is heavy with the smell of sweat, as fighters are gearing up to spar one another with controlled intensity. In this mix is Del Mar College physical therapy major, Colt Gillis. Gillis is a former Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and is currently a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) coach who is no stranger to this feeling of controlled chaos.…

Self-defense classes offered to DMC students and staff

Students, faculty and staff got a free self-defense class that aimed to help them feel safe and learn basic skills to protect themselves in case of an attack.   Some who attended the class on Feb. 24 said the one-time opportunity to learn basic self-defense skills was not enough. They want DMC to provide more opportunities to continue learning the skills .    Amie Valdez, a student assistant at the Student Success Center said that learning how to defend yourself, although basic, is a necessity. Being female and leaving campus when its dark, which Valdez and others has have done. “I’ve been…

Student spotlight: Female welder breaks generational curse

What’s your definition of the American dream? Maybe it’s a nice house, maybe it’s having your own sky view office, or maybe it’s all of the above. But for Del Mar College welding student, Joanna Tello, it’s a matter of breaking her generational curse of poor education. A dream made possible, as she put it, through the help of Del Mar College. According to DMC welding instructor, Richard Lugo, he estimates a total of 10-15 female students throughout the whole program, Tello included. An unfortunate occurrence as Lugo describes the opinion of many instructors on their female welding students.  “Honestly…

Student spotlight: From NFL dreams to healing hands

Everyone has goals, everyone has dreams, but not everyone has the opportunity to make them a reality. For Del Mar College student and kinesiology major Ace Navarijo, this statement became his untimely truth after enduring a Friday night high school football game that forever altered his path. A path, according to Navarijo, that had been set in stone for him since he could remember. “My biggest dream growing up, I wanted to play in the NFL,” Navarijo said. “I felt that that was my only way of providing back to my parents and every penny that they used on me…

Digging deep into newspaper archives

Foghorn News is currently running its 88th volume of the newspaper. Its history traces back to 1937, leaving a long-winded account of Del Mar’s history in its wake. What has happened in those 87 years? That’s what I’m going to find out. Welcome to The Port Hole, where I’ll be digging up Foghorn archives and telling you about what I could find. Some of you might be wondering, “why the Port Hole?” To which my answer has to do with its historical significance. Let’s go back to the November 27, 1935 edition of The College News, which was Del Mar’s,…

DMC students can ride the bus for free

Up until this point I had only rode the bus for school and once with the city.   A benefit of the city bus is that not only are Del Mar students able to ride the bus with their student I.D. but kids K-12 can also ride free with an active student I.D. In my mind I pictured that it would be easy to approach random people on the bus, but I was surely mistaken. Upon entering the bus, the smell of strawberry Pop Tarts filled the air, all of which seemed to be coming from the bus driver, which…
