Texas Rising’s Del Mar College chapter is hosting a meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17 for all students who are interested in social issues like LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive rights, environmental activism, and immigration. The chapter welcomes students interested in joining meetings and becoming an official member. Founded by the Texas Foundation Network in 2006, the Texas Rising organization has expanded to nearly 25 colleges and universities with the mission to raise political awareness among students. Judges needed for speech on the beach

DMC Speech on the Beach is seeking volunteers from Feb 7th – 9th to assist with its 18th annual event at the Coles building located at the Heritage campus.  Sarah Contreras, Professor of Speech communications, is coordinating volunteer sign-ups. “If you feel you are unqualified … do not worry. Law professor visists DMC to discus students rights

On Jan 30 Texas State University professor of Journalism and Mass Communication, Gilbert D. Martinez spoke on Free Speech rights and First Amendment rights to DMC journalism and media students prior to giving a speech at the Heritage campus Retama room. Martinez discussed the challenges facing free expression in today’s digital age and emphasized the need for protecting constitutional rights. He urged students and faculty that attended to remain vigilant in defending press freedom and the public’s rights to access information.  

Corpus Christi Police Academy prepares cadets for the field

On Jan 28-29, the Corpus Christi Police Academy held training evaluations for their cadets at their new Oso Creek location, as well as on Del Mar College Oso Creek Campus. The scenario-based evaluations are supposed to simulate real life situations that officers must deal with in the field. Twenty-eight cadets from the 84th class tested their knowledge and instincts on what to do in these stressful situations. Cadets undergo about 1300 hours of training before they graduate. People’s Assembly discuss major local issues at meeting

The People’s Assembly convened on Jan. 24-25 at All Saints Episcopal Church for its bi-annual, two-day event, bringing together activists, community leaders, and environmental advocates. The gathering aimed to discuss issues of corporate greed, water rights, and labor organization, while strengthening solidarity for environmental justice. Chloe Torres, Coastal Bend Regional coordinator, led the event. Deadline for graduation applications is near

Planning on graduating this spring? The deadline to submit graduation packets is Wednesday, Feb 19. Students in their final semester of classes must apply for graduation, whether they plan to participate in commencement ceremonies or not a completed application must include an academic evaluation with original signature from your advisor. Do not submit a graduation packet if you have not completed the entirety of your necessary degree/certificate requirements. Students applying for multiple degrees/certificates must submit separate evaluations for each. Valdar’s Market aims to provide for Vikings in need

Ever heard of Valdar’s Market? This on-campus food pantry provides eligible Del Mar College students with access to various food and hygiene products. The food items provided for the students are there to allow students to make a meal with or just go in to grab some snacks. The food pantry doesn’t just offer food, but also provides personal hygiene products such as deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, shower gels, razors, dental floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, nail clippers, antibacterial ointment and first-aid products. The siren still accepting student work

Del Mar College’s general interest literary magazine, “The Siren,” is currently working on a return after a five-year hiatus. Submissions from currently enrolled Del Mar students are being accepted through Friday, Feb. 14. Serving as a collection of visual and/or literary arts, The Siren stopped publication after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the Fall 2019-Spring 2020 edition, the magazine has remained dormant despite plans for an eventual return. Now, in Spring 2025, the plans are being actioned. Intramural Sports Kicks Off with Basketball Tournament

The first intramural tournament of the spring semester will be 3v3 basketball, beginning on Monday, Feb. 10. Games will be played from 2:30-4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and will run until the championship on Feb. 24. All teams will play on each game day. The tournament will be a double round robin format meaning that every team will play each other twice regardless of how many wins or losses they have.
