An ode to college clubs, RSOs

Del Mar has been through changes over the years, but what has stuck around always is student clubs. Since Del Mar’s opening in 1935, activities and clubs slowly grew from only a few small department groups into the busy student organizations around now.

In the earlier years, most clubs were connected through academic programs. These departmental registered student organizations (RSOs) gave students a way to go over real world skills, compete in events and represent their club. As Del Mar expanded, the Student Life office created a formal system for registering and supporting clubs, helping them with events and fundraisers.

Some of Del Mar’s oldest clubs are still active as of today, such as the Spanish Club and the Press Club which organized at Del Mar in 1935, and Phi Sigma, a music sorority founded in 1966 and one of Del Mar’s oldest fine arts group. Honor societies such as Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Beta Gamma have also become active on campus. They have been recognizing students’ achievements and giving members chances to volunteer and connect with other peers. By the 1970s, some new community-focused groups began to evolve. They have included chapters tied to statewide organizations that have supported underrepresented  students.

As of today, Del Mar supports more than 30 registered student clubs across their campuses. The Office of Student Leadership and Campus Life hosts regular events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities that bring groups together. Del Mar College give students a chance to meet people, build some skills and be a part of the community. These student organizations and groups will continue to shape and grow what campus life will look like for a future Vikings.
