‘Leading’ the charge backstage

If handwriting is a dying art, then I am single-handedly keeping it alive. Or at least, that’s how I feel when I’m working on Del Mar Drama’s latest play, “Leading Ladies.”

For those who don’t know, “Leading Ladies” takes the premise of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and mixes it with the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” to make one hilariously ridiculous play.

The play takes place in 1958 and follows two struggling Shakespearean actors, Leo and Jack, as they seek to fleece the ailing Florence out of her large inheritance by posing as two missing family members of hers.

Soon, a series of love triangles emerge involving the two actors and Florence’s associate Audrey and her daughter Meg, much to the ire of Meg’s fiancee Duncan.

Things come to a head, as the two real family members plan to return right before Leo and Jack can fully realize their scheme, culminating in a chaotic performance of “Twelfth Night.”

I chose not to audition for this production, though that doesn’t mean I haven’t been involved in it whatsoever. Instead, I have merely been working backstage as part of my classes.

Of all the classes I have, the costumes one has kept me the busiest. Our professor, Shara Haghjoo, has been in the process of putting together everyone’s costumes.

Part of that process involves fittings, wherein the actors come into our costume shop, try on their costumes, and take notes on what needs to be changed.

I have been responsible for putting together the notes, which has essentially just been layers upon layers of handwriting.

That being said, I love being able to write. Watching the fittings take place has given me great insight into how the process of putting together a costume works. It takes a lot more than I thought.

Speaking of which, this show sports very interesting costumes! Given the nature of the leads and the ’50s settings, it’s been very interesting watching everyone dress in a way they’d otherwise never likely try.

“Leading Ladies” will begin performances on Nov. 7 at 7:30p.m. in the Finley Theatre.
