Foghorn staff brought home 27 wins from the annual Texas Community College Journalism Association conference Nov 6-8 at the University of Texas-Tyler.
Students competed in the Live Contest at the conference, which is a mock news event that allows students to cover a news event in real-time. This year’s mock event was a press conference and crime scene for unknown remains found on campus. Foghorn reporters Layla Fonseca and Natalia Zamora earned first place for Headline Writing, while Editor-in-Chief Evie Lopez, Online Editor Arianna Rios, and reporter Rogelio Garcia earned second place for Photo Package.
In addition to the Live Contest, students attended how-to workshops on photography, news writing, and mobile broadcast, as well as speaker sessions on topics from podcasts and sports photography to applying journalism skills outside the newsroom.
The conference concluded with the results of the Previously Published contest winners, where the Foghorn brought home 25 awards, including seven first-place honors. First place wins were former Online Editor Haylie Godoy for news photo and news writing; former Editor-In-Chief Lola Ponce Gamboa for editorial writing; Gamboa and Godoy for multimedia package; former Photo Editor Edward Green for sports photo; Peyton Henderson for audio news; and Nygel Hudson Williams for video sports.
