Tenth annual Spooktacular at Windward takes months of preparation

Halloween came early to Del Mar College with the Spooktacular event’s 10th anniversary. Mental and physical health organizations sent representatives to provide students with information about each hospital, insurance, and so much more. There were vendors providing information on women’s and men’s health, TRIO, the Student Support Service, the South Coastal Area Health Education Center, and more.

Additionally, a small office offered free flu shots for students.

Representatives were dressed up in costumes and giving out treats. The most recognizable vendor was the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority, with Jeremy Sirio dressed as a man being attacked by an octopus. He was there to inform students that they could ride the bus for free by showing their student ID.

“This event is planned months in advance for the benefit of the student,” stated Jessica Edwards, director of the Counseling Center. “It’s designed to show us students that there is more support available to us than we realize in the Corpus Christi community,”

This was Del Mar student Ariela Rodriguez third time attending, and she said the event is a noble thing for the counselors to do.

The Spooktacular also held the Haunted Maze: The Creepy College. While it was not scary, students like Isabella and Katy loved the detail that went into it, and that “it was not anxiety-inducing.”

The decorations and preparations for the haunted maze had started a week in advance, according to Jessica Edwards. “Many of the decorations came from either the counselors’ budget or the faculty donated their Halloween decorations.”

At the end of the maze, when participants graduated from Creepy College, they received a meal ticket for free pizza and a drink.
