Del Mar College will host Denim Day activities at the Heritage Campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 29 to raise awareness of sexual assault and show solidarity with survivors.
“Sexual violence can happen to anyone, no matter their age, race, gender, or what they are wearing,” said Counseling Center Director Jessica Edwards.
Students and staff will wear jeans in support of those who have experienced sexual violence, along with hosting a display to share messages of support and learn about sexual assault prevention and awareness. Del Mar once again is partnering with The Purple Door, an organization that assists anyone affected by domestic or sexual violence. The Purple Door is donating many of the jeans students will see at the event, and will be on hand with information on their services.
Del Mar College’s student chapter of the American Association of University Women will also be helping provide information on statistics and awareness with activities students can participate in, learning not only about campus but local city resources that individuals in need may get access to.
Edwards said that hosting the event helps teach students how it is important learn about sexual violence statistics and to break myths and unhelpful beliefs.
“We want students to feel educated about what to do if this ever happens to them or someone they know and we want students to feel empowered with knowledge to stand up against sexual violence,” said Edwards.
The Denim Day events will take place on Heritage Campus on the lawn between White Library and Music Building 2 (GENB). For more information, contact the Counseling Center at 361-698-1586 or dmcccounseling@delmar.edu.
