Your gender is your credit

Gender roles, when it comes to sexual assault, have become a double standard, with women too often portrayed as irrational and men as brave souls. For a current example, Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing was delayed after allegations brought forward by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of her sexual assault that took place 36 years ago. It’s wrong to think that Kavanaugh would be questioned as equally as if it were Dr. Ford sitting in his seat herself. As I was able to see on C-SPAN, that is not the case. The Judiciary Committee’s ranking member, Dianne Feinstein, started…

Taking a stance Nike just did it

For the past 30 years, Nike has worked to cement its slogan, “Just Do It,” into American culture. It represents itslef with the best of the best in sports. Professional athletes such as tennis player Serena Williams and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. can be seen representing Nike in countless campaigns. To celebrate 30 years of business, Nike released an ad campaign with NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with the caption, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything,” placed across Kaepernick’s face. The ad stirred many emotions as loyal customers of the brand could then…

Media’s role is crucial

With the semester about to start the Foghorn editors thought it would be a great idea to say what we’re all about. As a crucial and well-known voice of the campus we have made it our goal to share our mission with you, our valued audience. My name is Erin Garza-Granados and I will be the editor-in-chief for the fall 2018 semester. With my time in this position I fully intend to carry out the role that I think is expected of a student publication. The Foghorn is composed of writers, editors and photographers trying to be the voice of…

Watts should stay out of race

District 4 Regent Guy Watts stepped down from his seat recently with the intention of running for an At-Large position this November. After a tumultuous term full of controversy, Watts should instead step away from the spotlight. Watts’ problems began in 2014, when he said Del Mar had become a “sea of mediocrity” after targeting immigrant and poor students. He has also said the college is “swamped” by “unprepared” and “remedial” students, while attempting to back up his claims with correlations between financial aid grants, illegal immigration and an increasing Hispanic population statewide. He has also advocated for the new…

Just be cautious on what you post

Justine Sacco was once the senior director of communications for an international holding company. While waiting to board a flight to Africa for a business trip, she logged on to Twitter. “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” Sacco posted. Her tweet quickly went viral, and by the time she landed in Africa, she already had been fired. With graduation right around the corner, students are starting to apply for jobs within their degree fields. While making high grades and obtaining ample experience is always important, students should also be aware of maintaining a respectful…

Saving the planet takes teamwork, commitment

As Earth seemingly falls apart more and more, we all need to be doing our part to help preserve the resources that we have. Being a school, DMC no doubt sees a large amount of paper and boxes flow through its campuses. The large amount of recyclable materials are no doubt being wasted as they are used once and then thrown away to be taken to the dump for seagulls to poop on and slowly rot in a mountain of trash. Recycling seems like a mundane thing, but it will be essential if we want to keep our planet clean.…

Time to reevaluate campus carry law

It’s a scene we’ve almost become used to seeing but one that nobody should ever have to experience — students running for their lives. Yet while mourning the loss of 17 of their classmates and teachers, the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, were on their way to speak with their elected officials about limiting gun rights. No matter what age, students have the right to feel safe on their campus. That right is more important than the gun rights so many fight for. In 2017, the year of spiked mass shootings, Senate Bill 11 took…

Don’t be the worst during the break

Spring break is one of the many times of the year that truly bring the worst out in people. Along with Black Friday, New Year’s and the Fourth of the July, people seemingly forget how to be normal and decent and truly make the rest of the population look horrible. Unfortunately, you can’t prevent people from doing all the things that occur during spring break, such as drinking and driving, partying too much, littering and more. However, there are ways to make the world a better place during a week where partying on Padre Island often makes the news for…

Healthier food options wanted at DMC

According to a study performed by the journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, students who look at nutritional labels more frequently tend to value healthy eating habits. When you go into the cafeteria at Del Mar College and look at the menu you don’t see the calorie count on the price board. Leon Rodriguez, director of Campus Dining, has tried to put the calorie count on the menu but has had some trouble in getting it processed. “Someone has gotten to me about that and I’m waiting to get a response from the vendors to put the calorie…

Diversity isn’t just a skin thing

One of the main things college should do is teach students about new and different cultures. Being surrounded by new people from different backgrounds is one way to become more cultured and learn about new ideas and ideologies. Del Mar College is offering an African-American history class for the first time in its history this spring. The class will document the struggles and history of African-Americans from early America in the 1500s through today. Take this African-American history class — not because you have to, but because learning about cultures outside of your own is important. Throughout your K-12 education,…
