Tax return season now underway

Del Mar accounting students are making tax season easy with free filing assistance for Coastal Bend residents.

VITA, or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, is offering tax return services for households with an income less than $56,000 in 2019. The program has several locations around the Coastal Bend.

Aldefino Palacios, VITA coordinator, uses accounting students to help at the Del Mar location.

“It’s all run by volunteers who passed certification,” Palacios said. “The ones here are first- and second-year tax students and accounting majors of mine.”

Qualifying participants are encouraged to attend and bring in a list of documents including a photo ID, W-2s, 1099s, and other tax-related documents for 2019. A detailed list of documents can be found in the Venters Business Building outside Room 149.

The program has been successful in helping the community and training students with real-world experience. Palacios has been satisfied with the program’s evolution.

“Eighteen years ago, we did 75 returns, and last year we did 1,000. I think it’s been pretty successful,” Palacios said.

VITA will be holding services from 2-6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Services are located in the Venters Business Building, Room 204, and will run through April 14.
