The history of the DMC Vikings

Last issue, the focus was finding out how the Port Hole name was almost that of the Foghorn newspaper. This time around, we’re looking to Del Mar History to fix it. Surely, we all know that Del Mar College’s mascot has always been the Vikings. Ever since the college first established a mascot back in 1939, the Viking name has been synonymous with what was called Corpus Christi Junior College at the time. Alright, something’s wrong here. Checking the College’s website, you’ll find that it says the mascot name dates back to 1939. After digging through the Foghorn archives however,…

Digging deep into newspaper archives

Foghorn News is currently running its 88th volume of the newspaper. Its history traces back to 1937, leaving a long-winded account of Del Mar’s history in its wake. What has happened in those 87 years? That’s what I’m going to find out. Welcome to The Port Hole, where I’ll be digging up Foghorn archives and telling you about what I could find. Some of you might be wondering, “why the Port Hole?” To which my answer has to do with its historical significance. Let’s go back to the November 27, 1935 edition of The College News, which was Del Mar’s,…

Foghorn editor in campus improv workshop

As of Jan. 27, 2024, I, Paul Farias, am a professionally funny person. If you want to see my resume, refer to the recording of the Drama Department’s improv comedy show we don’t have. It’ll tell you a whole bunch of nothing, seeing as how it doesn’t exist (to my knowledge). Let me give you a low-down on my experience in Nathan Ray Clark’s improv comedy workshop and show. MONDAY The first day I showed up, I was a little late because I didn’t figure out where to go yet. Turns out we were going to the same theater that…

Studio B under new ownership

The date is Jan. 20, and I have no clue where I am. Sure the address, 1609 Agnes, is clear in my mind, but that doesn’t mean I know where my destination is. I’m looking for the newly christened Studio B, which many of you may remember as The NASA. The famed local venue recently changed owners. Jan. 20 marked the venue’s first show after ownership changed, and after stumbling my way around the building, I finally made my way inside to catch the show right before it started. CLEARVIEW The first band of the night was Clearview, which described…

Upcoming local musicians released self-titled EP

If you’re looking to get into local music, then Animal Mood’s got you covered. The Corpus Christi natives steadily released single after single over the course of 2023, eventually culminating in a much larger release. Right before the year’s closure, Dec. 29 to be exact, the four-piece act released a self-titled EP. Clocking in with six songs under its belt, allow me to tell you about all six of them. ‘ALWAYS SOMETHING’ Kicking off the EP is “Always Something,” which plays into the band’s proclivity for the vintage. And by plays into, I mean it holds on to it and…
