Speech Professor Mike Jones is more than just a teacher. To students, he is a beloved professor, to faculty, a helpful hand and caring colleague. To Del Mar College, he is the 21st Dr. Aileen Creighton Award recipient.  “To be recognized as somebody who does that for my students and my faculty colleagues, that meant a lot.” Jones said. Rush Week offers chance to connect with other students

The Harvin Center’s main lobby will be hosting Club Rush Week from Sept. 18-22. “Club Rush Week is the week that we recruit students to join the different clubs we have here on campus,” said Grace Carreon with Student Leadership and Campus Life. “Whatever club that interests them, they can just speak to the members and see what their needs are.” Clubs are not the only groups that students are open to joining, however. “We also have the Student Government Association that they can join,” Carreon said. Resources available both online and in person

From virtual counseling services to reserving books online for pickup, resources on campus have shifted since the COVID pandemic, with more available online while still being available in person. With the current construction at Heritage Campus, including renovations on the White Library, many resources and study areas have been relocated to the Barth Learning Resources Center on Windward Campus. Many library services move locations

As the new semester gets underway, Heritage Campus’ William F. White Library remains under construction. Resources for students are still available, just in different locations. Student IDs are available at both Heritage Campus and Windward Campus. IDs can be made at the Heritage Campus in the Harvin Student Center from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays. The Barth Learning Resources Center at Windward Campus also makes student IDs. Proof of registration and a state-issued ID card are required to obtain one. Counseling Center offers many services

As the fall semester begins, students could potentially be experiencing major stressors. Whether it be major life changes or relationship issues, Del Mar College’s Counseling Center is always here to help. Jessica Edwards, director of the Counseling Center, said the center hopes to continue breaking the stigma surrounding mental health by building a community of support in the college. “The Counseling Center provides mental health services to DMC students. We provide individual and couples counseling, as well as consultations and crisis management. Local author reads from new book at MAS seminar

Chef, others also take part in Mexican American Studies program event Del Mar College’s Mexican American Studies program held its ninth annual summer seminar on July 29. The six-hour event took place in Heritage Campus’ General Academics and Music Building, with a keynote by Alberto Rodriguez, director of the Mexican American Studies Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The event also hosted special guest and local author Diana López as well as multiple performances by folklorico dancer Teresa Saldivar. Youth program robots during weeklong camp Del Mar College held a five-day programing and coding camp for sixth- through eighth-graders, concluding in a robotics competition on July 21. Starting on July 17, 24 middle school students from West Oso ISD and other Corpus Christi schools met at the Oso Creek Campus. Over the next five days, the students began receiving instruction and getting the chance to grow familiar with the various types of programable robots the camp uses. Middle schoolers learn robotics, more at Del Mar camp For most middle school students in Corpus Christi, the start of summer vacation is spent at the beach, by the pool, or simply enjoying life beyond the classroom. But for 40 Corpus Christi middle schoolers, their first month of summer vacation was spent learning about robotics and engineering at Del Mar College’s Oso Creek Campus. The end of the semester is here, and with it, graduation and commencement. To kick off the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the approximately 782 graduating students, Del Mar College has invited Doctor of Toxicology and Del Mar College alumnus Natividad Roberto Fuentes Jr. to give the keynote address at the commencement ceremony this Friday. Fuentes graduated from Del Mar College in 2011 with an associate degree in biology and a certification in biotechnology.
