Stay local, save money

With Spring Break right around the corner, many people will start planning trips to go out of town. However, for those looking to save some money and stay local it can be hard to find things to do if you don’t know where to look. Fortunately we’ve managed to find several events here in Corpus Christi that will get your planning off to a good start.

Concrete Street Amphitheater is hosting two concerts for rap fans and country fans alike. Spring Break Takeover is a rap concert being held on March 9 featuring Kevin Gates, Yella Beezy (with King Kyle Lee), Renni Rucci and more. It’s held on Concrete Street’s main stage. Gates open at 7 p.m. and tickets start at $40 at www.concretestreet.net.

Spring Break on the Coast is a country music mashup of several artists taking up the main stage. This lineup includes Cody Johnson, Koe Wetzel, Kevin Fowler and Randal King. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets are on sale online starting at $25.

Concrete Street isn’t the only venue holding concerts during our week away. Both Brewster Street Ice House and House of Rock have events lined up.

Brewster Street has two shows planned. Signo, a Tejano group, will take the stage with Robert Ray on March 15. Doors open at 8 p.m. and tickets are on sale in house and on their website, brewsterstreet.net, starting at $22.

Timeline, a Journey tribute band, will perform the next day with doors also opening at 8 p.m. and tickets starting $7.

If the mainstream doesn’t appeal to you and you’re looking for a night of new sound and tension, House of Rock is hosting the Waken Open Air Battle of the Bands on March 14. Tickets are on sale at texashouseofrock.com for $10.

Now, concerts are all well and good, but sometimes people are looking for something a little more laid back. If you’re someone with a more “refined” taste you might enjoy what Harbor Playhouse has in store. The Playhouse is working in collaboration with the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Department of Theatre and Dance to bring you their version of the musical production “Mamma Mia!” at 2:30 p.m. March 10 and at 7:30 p.m. March 14-16. All tickets will be on sale online and in house with tickets starting at $10 for children 13 and under, $15 for students with a valid student ID, $15 for military with a valid ID and $20 for adults.

With all these music-themed events happening it can be hard to find a bit of variety. However, if you’re sporty and/or just looking for a drink and a good time, Cassidy’s Irish Pub has you covered. They are hosting two events on March 16 that could be the perfect end to Spring Break you’re looking for. As an early celebration for St. Patrick’s Day, which falls on the following day, the pub will host their annual Shamrock Shuffle. This is a running event that boasts a 5K run/walk or a 1K “Leprechaun Chase.” Both events will be open until the day of for registration both for single runners and teams. For any questions about pricing and registration contact Leigh Walsh at 361-852-1211 or lwalsh@stpatrickschool.org.

The Shamrock Shuffle serves as the kickoff to Cassidy’s other yearly event, Cassidy’s Paddy’s Day Festival, a block party containing Irish dancing, bagpipes, costume contests, live music and more. Since this event is still being planned you can follow its progress online on Cassidy’s website or on the “Cassidy’s Paddy’s Day Festival” event page on Facebook.
