Student bake sales showcase culinary skills

Del Mar College Culinary Department at Oso Creek holds a student-led bake sale every Thursday during the second half of the semester, where everything is fresh and homemade.

While the final bake sale for the Fall 2025 semester happened Nov. 20, the sale is held in fall and spring semesters and anyone can stop by for fresh and homemade bakes.

Students in the baking course put together the bake sale with a new manager each week. Baked goods are chosen by the manager of the week based on what they think would be the most delicious and successful. They learn skills like ordering, overseeing a kitchen, giving direction and overall leadership skills. Students put together a packet of 40 pages that include all of the ingredients and recipes that the students work on for weeks to complete.

Proceeds of the bake sales go to the cost of food supplies, while tips go to the students. Everything is reasonably priced and much cheaper than items found at local grocery stores. Customers love that everything is fresh and homemade and they don’t have to worry about any preservatives in their food.

The Oct. 30 event was a fall-inspired, Halloween-themed bake sale with everything from spooky bread to creamy tomato basil soup.

“The chocolates were a special one. We had a chocolates class. There were half of the people in that class last semester so I decided to keep it on the menu,” said student Mazzy Tagliaferra at the Oct. 30 sale. She also enjoyed “seeing how we could make everything festive.”

“I love seeing people’s reactions. It’s my favorite part about everything. Everyone has a super full tray and they think everything is super cute,” said Tagliaferra. “I love that it’s all made here, not made somewhere else and brought in because that would have preservatives. I love the fact that the food I get here would be preservative-free.”
