Student Aaron Estrada had to remain calm as an elevator technician worked to free him. “Can the doors cut me in half?” Estrada asked as the doors were cracked open on the third floor of the White Library. The elevator was stuck between the third and fourth floors of the library on Del Mar College’s East Campus on March 23, with Estrada alone inside. “At first I was rattled,” Estrada said. “I couldn’t believe it was happening. Both hope to become counselor after graduation Sarah Fecht / Reporter Del Mar College’s Addiction Studies Program helps students who want to counsel individuals who struggle with chemical dependency. This program has a unique set of students who are set to graduate this month. A father and son are graduating from the same program with the same degree. George Ramirez, a single father and a licensed cosmetologist who owns his own business, decided he wanted to go back to school to pursue his associate degree through the Addiction Studies Program to become a licensed chemical dependent counselor, or LCDC. Completed in fall 2013 and opened in January 2014, the structure was designed to accommodate updated facilities for music majors. Its glassy, multi-layered exterior gives the building a grandiose appearance, and its vast space provides a much improved level of services for students studying musical theory. “In addition to its impressive appearance, the building both has an open and secluded interior space in which to comfortably study and practice,” said Mike Cantu, a music major and trumpet player.…
