Del Mar Intramurals hosted the opening round for the 3v3 basketball tournament at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10 in the Heritage Campus gym. Teams played 10-minute games with substitutes allowed at any time if you had them.
During one of the first matchups between The Outsiders and The Ballazz there was a heated argument following the game. This caused a disruption in the tournament as some students left the gym, and others had to be added onto new teams.
When play resumed, The Outsiders faced off against Team Puro Pan in the most exciting matchup of the day. In a game filled with impressive scorers, neither team could pull ahead by more than a point or two before it would become tied again. Mark Rosales and Nate Alfaro led the way on both ends for the Outsiders as they scored the final three points in overtime to complete a hard earned 13-10 victory.
Meanwhile, on the other court Rev Nation matched up against Team Flight. Nathaniel Martinez and Jesse Valdez were active and aggressive as they led the way for Team Flight but not without a battle as Reve Wicks and Ethan Gonzales worked mid-range shots to keep their team within reach, but ultimately they fell short as Team Flight edged a 16-14 victory.
Next for Team Flight was a match against Elisee Garcia and Team Puro Pan. Garcia and teammate Alejandro Soto started off the scoring for Team Puro Pan, but as the game went on Team Flight showed impressive stamina as their pace stayed high and allowed them to finish the game with an 11-8 win.
The Outsiders finished their day with a match against Rev Nation. The Outsiders showed great teamwork by switching in substitutes to ensure that none of their players became too exhausted to maintain their high efficiency. This allowed them to keep a lead throughout the game and cruise to an 11-6 victory.
The tournament continues Monday, Sept. 15 with round two. The Outsiders and Team Flight will matchup against each other to see which team will remain undefeated and have the advantage in the case of a tiebreaker to make the championship game. Students are welcome to watch the games in the Heritage Campus gym from 2:30-4 p.m.
