Foghorn News, along with Del Mar College, are both celebrating their 90th anniversary this semester. The first issue of the student-led newspaper debuted on Nov. 27, 1935.
To celebrate 90 years of publication, the staff and advisors will debut a new layout in the Spring 2026 semester, and the new masthead debuts in this edition. Current Features Editor Paul Farias designed the new masthead.
Originally created as his final project for his Intro to Public Relations class, his initial design differs from the final design seen today.
“Originally it was FM for Foghorn Media, and I wanted to do FM because it sounded like a radio thing,” Farias said. “My idea going in was I wanted to bridge the different communication methods together.” The bars on the side building up to the FM were meant to symbolize a signal connection.
“When we decided to use it for the paper it was changed to FN,” Farias said. His original design was also all black, but the colors were added to incorporate some of Del Mar’s official colors. The new design seeks to show off a sleeker and more modern Foghorn News.
