Música y cultura at Dia de los Muertos

The crowds turned out for the popular annual Dia De Los Muertos festival in downtown on Saturday, Nov. 1. The festival is sponsored by K-Space Contempary and Axis Tattoo, and serves as the main fundraising event for K-Space to generate the art gallery and studio’s operating funds.

This year the festival celebrated its 18th year. It all takes place in downtown Corpus Christi on Chaparral, Starr, Mesquite, Taylor and Peoples streets. This event has been recognized as a top Dia del los Muertos Celebration in the US/Texas and voted Best Festival in The Band Magazine Locals List 2016-2025. One main goal for this event is to be able to celebrate and honor the rich cultural heritage of Mexico and South Texas.

Attendees took in live music and performances at four different stages all through afternoon and evening. There were Latin-influenced rock & pop music, mariachis, ballet folklorico and cultural dancers, youth performers, local DJs, and regional up-and-coming bands. This event also included a Hecho a Mano Art Expo, kids activities, a community ofrenda display, art exhibitions and demonstrations, food and drinks.

There were 46 sponsors, 85 vendors, and 25 food trucks; they set up to promote their business, and many of the sponsors hosted one of the main music stages.

Students from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar College were there to demonstrate various set processes, display architectural designs, and perform at the event.

K-Space also featured a fine arts exhibition of thematic works, a youth art exhibition and a youth piñata contest set up for K-12 groups, called Extravagancia de Piñatas. One main attraction for this event, and something that was not to be missed, was the community ofrenda display, a tribute for visitors to honor their deceased loved ones.
