‘Project Hail Mary’ a funny and impactful sci-fi story

“Project Hail Mary” is the brand-new science fiction comedy directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, based on the novel by Andy Weir. Lord and Miller, the directors responsible for films like “The Lego Movie,” “Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs,” and the “21 Jump Street” films, have a reputation for balancing comedy with genuine, emotionally powerful moments. “Project Hail Mary” was no exception.

An alien bacterium is found eating the energy from the stars throughout the galaxy, causing Earth to rapidly cool. The governments of the world combine their best minds to solve the problem, discovering a star and planet seemingly unaffected by the alien bacteria. They send a small team of scientists into deep space to investigate the planet and see if they can use it to help save Earth. However, it is revealed that humanity isn’t the species trying to save their planet.

The film stars Ryan Gosling, known for his roles in serious films like “Drive” and “Blade Runner 2049.” But as recent films like “Barbie” prove, he’s at home with comedic roles as well. The film is primarily about the relationship between his character, Dr. Ryland Grace, and the rock alien, nicknamed Rocky. This relationship is wonderfully done and the main driving force behind the film.

The film relies heavily on practical effects and sets, and this makes a huge difference in the quality of the movie. With film companies willing to use AI for cheap labor, rather than relying on human talent, it’s refreshing to have a film that relies mostly on classic film-making techniques. Rocky is beautifully brought to life using a mix of puppetry and CGI.

Some may not be enthused about the film length. Clocking in at 2 hours and 37 minutes, the film is quite the journey, but it doesn’t waste a second. Although it may feel slow at the start, it’s all there to set up and make the climax of the film more impactful.

Overall, the film is an excellent example that artistry is alive in film today. The film is a must-watch for science fiction fans, but also anyone who wants a funny yet emotional storyline.
