The crowds turned out for the popular annual Dia De Los Muertos festival in downtown on Saturday, Nov. 1. The festival is sponsored by K-Space Contempary and Axis Tattoo, and serves as the main fundraising event for K-Space to generate the art gallery and studio’s operating funds. Foghorn News debuts new masthead for Spring 2026

Foghorn News, along with Del Mar College, are both celebrating their 90th anniversary this semester. The first issue of the student-led newspaper debuted on Nov. 27, 1935. To celebrate 90 years of publication, the staff and advisors will debut a new layout in the Spring 2026 semester, and the new masthead debuts in this edition. Foghorn staff brought home 27 wins from the annual Texas Community College Journalism Association conference Nov 6-8 at the University of Texas-Tyler. Students competed in the Live Contest at the conference, which is a mock news event that allows students to cover a news event in real-time. This year’s mock event was a press conference and crime scene for unknown remains found on campus. Foghorn earns national honors in Washington D.C.

Several Foghorn staff members attend MediaFest 2025 in Washington D.C. Oct. 14-17, learning more about student media and new trends in news coverage and technology, bringing home a lot of information, and a lot of awards. MediaFest is hosted by the College Media Association, the Associated Collegiate Press, and Society of Professional Journalists. The Foghorn snagged 26 CMA Pinnacle awards, including first place awards in breaking news photo, video newscast, feature video package and comics, and a first place Best in Show advertisement. More than 35 four-year colleges turned out for the fair at White Library

Del Mar students had the chance to stop and chat with more than 35 four-year colleges during a college fair in White Library. The Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers hosted the Sept. 30 community college fair. In addition to the schools, there were also separate booths for student resources, Del Mar’s libraries, TRIO, and a news station.  This opportunity allowed Del Mar students and students from Collegiate High School to get a view at what a four-year school may have in store from them. Degrees and certificates removed as part of regular curriculum management

CORRECTION: A graphic originally published with this article inaccurately reported a deactivated certification. The Certification in Computer Programming: Interactive Game Technology was deactivated. The AAS degree in Computer Programming is NOT deactivated. Del Mar has deactivated four degrees and four certificate programs due to low enrollment. At the Sep. 9 Board of Regents meeting, Del Mar College Vice President And Chief Academic Officer Jonda Halcomb gave a report on the deactivated programs to the board. Vikings Spike Enrollment

Student enrollment for the Fall 2025 semester at Del Mar College has grown, a welcome increase after years of COVID-affected enrollment numbers. Enrollment currently is at 12,035. Around this time in the Fall 2024 semester, enrollment was at 9,672, a 24 percent increase.  One reason behind this growth is the introduction of the new tuition waiver program, Freedom to Dream. Out of the enrollment numbers, 1,738 are Freedom to Dream students, with dual credit enrollment accounting for 3,100, and roughly 1,200 for continuing education students. Valdar’s Market aims to provide for Vikings in need

Ever heard of Valdar’s Market? This on-campus food pantry provides eligible Del Mar College students with access to various food and hygiene products. The food items provided for the students are there to allow students to make a meal with or just go in to grab some snacks. The food pantry doesn’t just offer food, but also provides personal hygiene products such as deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, shower gels, razors, dental floss, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, nail clippers, antibacterial ointment and first-aid products. New Continuing Education grant opportunity for Building Construction Trades

Del Mar College’s Continuing Education department has begun offering a building construction trades grant to anyone looking to boost their skills. The grant, which started in August 2024, will continue to be available through June 2026. The classes are four weeks long, offered both on weekends and evenings. This grant offers classes in six different trades: carpentry, house wiring, cabinetry, plumbing, print reading and lastly trim and stairs. Open house highlights student resources

Oso Creek Campus hosted their second annual open house on Oct. 31, to showcase all the available resources for students. “We want students to know we are also Del Mar College and have resources available for you,” said Sara King, director of student engagement and retention at Oso Creek.
