Venezuela’s road to victory at Worlds Baseball Classic

The World Baseball Classic opened  March 6 and ended March 17 in Miami, Florida, with Team Venezuela taking the win 3-2 against Team USA. The win marked Venezuela’s first win at the Classic and held symbolic meaning for the players who celebrated the win by singing their national anthem, “Gloria al Bravo Pueblo.” The WBC began in 2006 and has been held roughly every three to four years since then (2006, 2009, 2013, 2017, 2023 and 2026). It has often been compared to the World Cup in soccer, and is used to celebrate national pride and global unity. The players…

OLYMPIC UPSET: France wins over United States, Canada

The 2026 Winter Olympic are in full swing in the depths of Milano Cortina, Italy. Of all the United States’ placements since that day, their third place in pairs skating is the most controversial (as of Feb. 12, when this column was written) thanks to the French pair that won gold, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron. Beaudry and Cizeron have a very interesting history. As in, they have none. The pair has been skating together for one year following the suspension of Nikolaj Sørensen (Beaudry’s previous partner), who was banned from the sport for at least six years following…

Phoebe Bridgers, 2022 EP Best Song: “If We Make It Through December” Worst Song: “Christmas Song” Underrated Hit: “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night (feat. Fiona Apple & Matt Berninger)” Overall: “So Much Wine” is a six-song Christmas EP containing covers of classic Christmas songs. While Bridgers is usually known for her lyricism, she makes the covers of these songs shine. Each song is a typically mellow Christmas song, and I enjoyed that. It kept the essence of her music without her having written the songs herself. The title track “So Much Wine” has the best production, but “If We Make It…

Loyola University professor and Texas historian Dr. Benjamin H. Johnson will give a lecture on “the stories we tell about Texas” at Del Mar on Nov. 6. Johnson was born in Houston and has lived here for a decade of his adult life, despite traveling abroad and across the U.S. From all these experiences, he learned the uniqueness of Texas’s mix of modern and outsized industries and communities that make Texas the state that is. “I love Texas and have spent most of my…

ALBUM ‘Man’s Best Friend’ (2025) Sabrina Carpenter Best Song: “When Did You Get Hot?” Worst Song: “House Tour” Underrated Hit: “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night” Overall: I generally did not like this album. The sound – synths, airy singing, and rhythmic choruses – is something Carpenter has been doing for a decade. And it isn’t her best work. It seems that after the success of “Short & Sweet (2024),” she’s leaning towards a more mature sound with innuendos stacked into bubbly pop. The only two songs that don’t fall into this trap are “When Did You Get Hot?”…

Del Mar Turkey Bowl is making a come back

On Friday, Oct. 24, the Del Mar College Turkey Bowl will return for the first time since 2015. It will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the Heritage Campus Kinesiology Track. Valdar’s Vikings and the Helm Holders will compete in a four-quarter flag football game to determine the winner. According to Margot Sorrell, who has served on the Turkey Bowl planning committee since the first game in 2008, the bowl has had a long history and a few different names. It began as a game between the English and Math departments and continued until 2010. Then, in 2012, it became…
