Victims and survivors share their hardship through art

Del Mar College’s Student Engagement and Retention Office has teamed up with various community agencies for National Crime Victims Rights Week on April 10-16. The week will feature many events, but the highlight is the “Express Past the Pain” exhibit in the White Library on East Campus. The exhibit will consist of artwork that helps express the victim’s feelings and promotes healing through art, writing or other styles in a healthy way. Student Art Association set to kick-off 27th annual exhibition April 1

More than 250 works of art will be featured in this year’s 27th annual Juried Student Exhibition, which opens on April 1 in the Fine Arts Building on East Campus. “The focus of the program is to bring young artists along and help them develop their artwork and instill in them a sense of competition,” said Ken Rosier, ceramics professor and chairman of Art and Drama Department. In 1967, art professor Joe Cain speculated that the way to create an art exhibition worthy of national acclaim was to focus on two genres, drawing and small sculpture, and to bring in a nationally recognized judge. Ride in Theater presents screening of “Short Circuit”

Johnny 5 comes back to life this month at the Corpus Christi Ride-In Theater’s screening of “Short Circuit.” The classic 1986 film, which features actors Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy, will screen at the Watergardens on Sept. 12 to close out the Port of Corpus Christi’s Summer Movie Series partnership with Ride-In. The film follows Number 5, a military robot who, after being experimented on, experiences an unexpected transformation when struck by lightning. Documentary on pot critic to debut during SXSW

The annual music and film festival runs March 13-22 in Austin. Among the highlights this year is the premiere of the film “Rolling Papers,” a documentary about the Denver Post’s first pot critic, Ricardo Baca, and the effect it had on journalism. Annual art show names winners

Lexy Garcia Reporter   The winners of Del Mar College’s annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture show were announced Feb. 20 during the show’s opening reception in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery. The Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award of $2,000 was awarded to Kurt Dyrhaug for the cast iron, small sculpture piece “Tonka Buster.” The White Library Purchase Award, also for $2,000, was awarded to Philip Laber for his multidimensional sculpture “Betrayed by Geometry and Time.” Margi Weir was awarded the DMC Permanent Collection Award and its $1000 prize for the piece “Variety Store.”     Honorable…
