Trail for American Dream grows cold

A large part of the community has been anxious ever since the time surrounding the presidential election, a time where deportation was the hot topic and fought for by many. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, was introduced in 2012 and allowed people ages 15-30 not born in the United States to apply for work permits and protection against deportation. The young men and women who are part of this program are called the DREAMers after the “Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act,” and their futures are in question. The new presidency has threatened the…

Del Mar shouldn’t raise tuition

It is unfair to increase the financial burden on the students of this community when the school moves in directions that will only increase spending. During the February Board of Regents meeting, a measure passed with an 8-1 vote to increase tuition for the 2017-2018 school year by $5 per credit hour. This may seem like a nominal amount of money to spend each year, however many students and their families already struggle to pay for college and many graduates struggle to pay back students loans. Student loans are key here. The school knows that the aid provided will…

10 reasons not to go to the beach

The beach is one of the most popular vacation destinations in South Texas. During spring break, a large amount of people flock there to have some fun — even though the beach is not fun at all. Here are 10 reasons why you should literally just stay home and watch some Netflix or something. Do anything or go anywhere but the beach. Literally anywhere else. Creepers trying to see breasts With an abundance of girls (above and below legal age), there is an unknown amount of strange older men with disappointing bodies everywhere. They have swim shorts that are…

Give Credit when it’s due: being a teacher is one of the most important jobs around

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” — Albert Einstein. Anyone who has gotten anywhere in life has gotten there with the help of a teacher. From the basic, fundamental skills needed for communication and surviving to the amazing information that fuels our minds and shapes our interests, teachers are by our side from a young age to guide us into the world and prepare us for it. So why is it that disrespecting and harassing teachers seems to have become a trend? Scrolling through social media, videos of students yelling…

Value of College lies in differing views

“I wish my teachers weren’t so biased.” It’s a comment we overheard this semester, and it shocked some of us — not just because it was said, but because so many people seemed to agree with it. Instead, how about, “Have an open mind.” Some people go to college because “it’s just what you do after high school.” Some go because their parents demand it. Some people go to college to broaden their horizons, not reinforce the things that they already believe. Or at least they should. If students are looking to simply be spoon-fed straight from the textbook they…

Funding cuts take toll on education

Colleges and universities across Texas are holding their breath in anticipation of what’s to come out of the 2017 legislative session. By the end of May, institutions will either let out a sigh of relief or a shriek of anxiety based on whether the Legislature will be lowering or raising the budget for higher education. The Texas Legislature, composed of the state Senate and House of Representatives, convenes every odd numbered year to pass bills into law and decide how to spend the enormous amount of money that Texas has. Jan. 10 saw the beginning of the 2017 legislative session…

The truth is not an attack

At a time when few know what to believe in the news — especially when read online — Corpus Christi residents are fortunate to have a local media that does not stop in its pursuit of the truth. Former Mayor Dan McQueen is the perfect example of what happens when elected officials refuse to answer to the media, which holds them accountable on behalf of the public. The situation with McQueen almost directly follows the road map of what many worry the Trump administration is on the road to. McQueen in fact became so distrusting of and unwilling to work…

Red light cameras should remain

When it comes to the red light cameras that monitor several major intersections around Corpus Christi, drivers tend to be either fiercely in favor of them or strongly opposed. Some see them as a nuisance, but the fact is they are a good idea and keep the community safer. The City Council plans to soon debate the removal of these cameras as the Corpus Christi Police Department is in the middle of reviewing the whole program. The program has lost money this fiscal year, and the low numbers have several in the community wondering if the cameras have a place…

New campus passed on bond

This year’s general election made history when Donald Trump won the presidency, beating Hillary Clinton with 290 electoral votes versus her 232, but aside from looking at the big picture on the national level, there was a lot of historical changes this election that happened in our community. Out of the 106,955 ballots cast in Nueces County, 53.46 percent of voters favored the $139 million bond proposal for a Del Mar College southside campus. Now that Phase 1 of construction will start sometime soon, the next question we should ask is what are our expectations for the future? Del Mar…

For-profit companies are not what we need

Educational institutions have adopted the idea that private, for-profit banking organizations are necessary and helpful in the management and distribution of funds from the government and colleges to students. Del Mar College has been in business with for-profit banking institutions for nearly 10 years, despite a history of some of these companies being corrupt and robbing students of vital funds. BankMobile, formerly Higher One, itself isn’t even a bank that Del Mar is working with, rather, it’s a company that works with a bank to manage funds, putting students’ money into far too many hands. So after lawsuits against Higher…
