Team Patriots take the flag football championship

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com   The NFL season has been over for a few weeks, but intramural flag football quickly filled the void for some. Unfortunately there was not a huge turnout this semester as compared with the fall semester, when there was over eight teams playing competitively. This time around only four showed up to play, which led to several games of the same four teams over two weeks — two Del Mar teams, two from Collegiate High School. With the second college team not showing up it was determined a semifinal round between two Collegiate teams would play with the…

Look! Up in the sky! It’s… intramural Ultimate Frisbee

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com “Got a Frisbee? Let’s play ultimate!” That was the way the intramural Ultimate Frisbee championship game was started, and who knew throwing a Frisbee around could get so intense? After two days of exhibition matches that were more for learning how to deal with the wind, the final game between Team JRC and Team Disk-iples came with controversy and tragedy. Team JRC started with the Frisbee going against the wind, which is a huge challenge as the Frisbee’s direction is mostly decided by the wind. Against the odds, JRC was able to score midway through the first…

Welcome back party kicks off new intramural season

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com   Dozens of people gathered near the Kinesiology Building to enjoy free food and play cornhole on Jan. 26 to celebrate the kickoff of the spring intramural season. Intramurals Director Kristy Urbick was pleased with the turnout and hopes to continue growing the program from a participation-filled fall semester. “I’m looking forward to seeing new faces like last semester since that’s what helps get the word out but also retaining all those who tried out for any event last time is important because they’ll be the ones to show the newcomers how to properly play,” Urbick said.…

Team Robert wins intramural basketball

Although it had been a couple years since playing in a competitive basketball game, Tevin Battle took the court and quickly regained his stellar playing style while helping Team Robert win the DMC intramural championship basketball game Nov. 16. “I had forgot just how fun playing ball with friends can be,” Battle said of his high school days. “When you have teammates that can match your intensity it takes the pressure off and makes playing as a team so much fun.” Battle scored 10 points in the championship game, which capped an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. Friendships quickly formed as teams…

Are you ready for some football? They are!

It was apparent that flag football had been the sport most students were waiting for this semester by the early entries in the Intramural Kickoff back in early September. When game day arrived, more than 60 had signed up for what is traditionally Del Mar’s most popular intramural sport. Last year just 24 suited up to play. This amount of impromptu scheduling and organizing could have easily given the staff a hard time but given how deep the schedule was it seems they were prepared for many students to register late. “The fact that we have a couple more workers…

Ultimate Frisbee players prep for tournament

While football season is in full swing and intramural flag football still a month away, many may just wait till then to play but a very fun and intense substitute to football is Ultimate Frisbee. It may sound very casual to throw a Frisbee to teammates until reaching the end zone to score points but that’s until you throw the Ultimate in there. The “ultimate” side of this game comes out when there are opposing team members grasping and leaping to stop one another from catching the Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee will appeal to former defensive back football players who love…

Thunder wins volleyball championship

The Unknowns get hit hard after loss in three-game matchup The intramural volleyball championship game on Sept. 29 was one for the ages. The match was the Thunder vs. the self-named Unknowns in a best-of-three matchup. The first game started off pretty one sided as the Unknowns took an early lead and never let up, finishing off the Thunder and taking first blood, 25-20. The second game stayed consistently even through the beginning as each team seemingly traded points back and forth until the Unknowns took charge and changed the score from 7-7 to 14-8 in a matter of 2…

Table tennis action intense

Last semester’s champion unseated by new player Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com With paddles in hand, it was only a matter of time before someone got spanked — in table tennis, that is. Intramurals hosted the one-day tournament on Sept. 19 in the gymnasium. Three table tennis stations allowed the five competitors to face off simultaneously. The first couple of matches were rather uneventful, but when competitors Colby Farr and Jonathan Garcia faced off, the two friends turned serious. Despite a valiant effort by Garcia, he was no match for Farr, last semester’s champion. Farr had been prepping to defend his title…
