Registration lines quick

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com With shorter lines and fewer system crashes this semester than in the past, registration, for most students, was relatively smooth. The shorter lines were attributed to the college’s efforts to get students to register early, through gift card giveaways, registration rallies and more. Lines were short, students were directed promptly to their designated advisers and photos for ID’s were all done in the Harvin Center, making the entire procedure convenient. The financial aid line was where students had their patience tested but even at that most students were content that this was the only place they had…

Wiffle Ball calls for close to intramural season

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Wiffle Ball ended the intramural activities for this semester. The strong turnout for the baseball-like sport surprised Intramural Director Kristy Urbick as this was a new activity added this semester. “I was very proud of the participation in intramurals this semester. Compared to last spring our attendance skyrocketed and I can’t wait to see new faces during the fall. I have a better knowledge of what sports are popular and I’m going to add volleyball and a couple other fun one-day sports to try and increase participation,” Urbick said. The activity even brought out some newcomers. “I…

Intramural soccer championship goes into sudden death

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com There was once a soccer game played, a game so epic that it had to be played inside of a gym just to contain the super amazingness of this game. Team Max played Team White Ice in the intramural soccer championship game. This came after Team Max beat Team Fortino and was warmed up enough to take on the undefeated White Ice. The game started off very one sided as White Ice went up 2-0 by the end of the half. Then White Ice lost all control in the 2nd half, Team Max came rushing back with…

Foghorn News takes home 36 awards from conference

The Foghorn News staff returned with 36 awards, including 12 for first place, from their annual state journalism conference in late March. More than 500 students from two- and four-year schools attended the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association conference in Dallas. “I think we did well. It was beneficial to everyone. They learned how to create better content for the Web and the paper,” said Foghorn News Editor-in-Chief Natalie Murphy. TIPA gives students the chance to compete against other journalism programs in both previously published and live contests, where they face off against their peers from other schools, regardless of…

Speaker series aims to help students succeed

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Why would any student need tips for college success? Most students have it all figured out, right? Well, the truth is that some students don’t, and that is pretty OK. “It’s OK if you don’t know where you want to be. Eighty percent of students change their majors at least once and the average student changes their major at least three times,” said peer tutor Agustin Bernier, who works in the Student Success Center. Bernier was one of six speakers who were a part of the 2017 Speaker Series, with the topic being “Tips for College Success,”…

Basketball participation not quite a slam dunk

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com All basketball fans should be rejoicing as we are truly in the thick of all things basketball — the NCAA Tournament is in its final stages, the NBA playoffs are right around the corner and 5-on-5 intramural basketball is here. With all this basketball going on it’s troubling that there is another drop in participation for intramurals even with the gym floor finally being finished and being put to use. Last semester only 3-on-3 half-court games were allowed because of the semi-start of rebuilding the gym floor, but there was abundance of teams ready to play. This…

Tennis players have no love for the heat

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Intramurals singles tennis tournament had a great turnout with 11 players signed up, ready to play and racquets in hand. Unfortunately time restrictions and the inability to have a second day due to several players unable to return the next day led to more of a “thanks for coming out, here’s a T-shirt” type of feel. Nonetheless the competition was highly competitive as well as very humid and hot, forcing one Gage Freeland to change from wind pants to shorts to deal with the heat. There was water and tennis racquets provided by the intramurals sports workers…

Swaggy G crowned king of intramural volleyball

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com Past champions Thunder fell to second place after newcomers Swaggy G won the intramural volleyball championship game on March 2. The championship game came after a two-game winning streak by the Thunder as Swaggy G were coming off a two-game rest period. In the end, rest won over momentum. It so happened that Swaggy G was only playing with five people and Thunder with seven. Against all odds Swaggy G player James Craig was ready for the challenge, saying: “We knew had to stay focused to help each other out because teamwork is important to win. We…

Team Goaty’s dominates at dodgeball

Dominic Perez dominicperez@foghornnews.com Only one day a semester, at a specific time and specific place, do you get to throw balls at people and not have anyone feel awkward about it. This semester, that meant 3:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in the gym for the intramural dodgeball tournament. It started with a four-team double-elimination tournament between teams Goaty’s, Max, Roland and BDBB. The first match between Goaty’s and Team Max offered an entertaining game, as Goaty’s was able to win easily through good teamwork to corner the last player on Team Max. The next matchup between Team Roland and Team BDBB…

Team Patriots take the flag football championship

Dominic Perez dperez@foghornnews.com   The NFL season has been over for a few weeks, but intramural flag football quickly filled the void for some. Unfortunately there was not a huge turnout this semester as compared with the fall semester, when there was over eight teams playing competitively. This time around only four showed up to play, which led to several games of the same four teams over two weeks — two Del Mar teams, two from Collegiate High School. With the second college team not showing up it was determined a semifinal round between two Collegiate teams would play with the…
