The Junior League of Corpus Christi (JLCC) will be hosting their 1st Annual Run Amuck 5K event on October 22, 2011 at Gulf Coast Racing on 5302 Leopard Street at 8:00 A.M. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the JLCC to benefit their work on many community projects in the coastal bend area mostly focused on child welfare. The event will feature a 3-mile course of different obstacles such as tires, a mud pit, and a wall, plus several other challenging feats.

The entry fee for the event is $55.00 as a $10.00 late fee is incurred for entry after September 30th but interested participants are still encouraged to enter. No entry will be accepted on the day of the race. The event is open to individuals’ aged 13 to 60+, though minors between 13-17 are required to have a parent/guardian signature to participate.

The 21st is the packet pick-up day for those participating in the run and there will also be a celebrity run on this day featuring former San Antonio Spurs player, Bruce Bowen. Attendance is free for this part of the event.

According to event co-chairman BeBe Bellfield there are nearly 150 entries so far with over 20 sponsors such as L&F Distributors, H-E-B, and our own DMC EMT students. She feels it is going to be a successful event.

Chris Black; Public Safety Education Department director/professor of the EMS Program has told me that 8 of his certified EMT students will be on stand-by to ensure safety at this event. Black and his program frequently participate in events such as these to promote community outreach and it also allows his Basic EMT students to be partnered up with certified EMT students for what he calls “service learning.”

Bellfield says, in regards to bringing Run Amuck to the Coastal Bend for the first time, “It’s a unique event that we haven’t had here before, it’s something fun to promote health and fitness and it also benefits our projects that we do for the community.”

So if you’re not afraid of a little bit of mud and challenging your endurance and want to help benefit your community, then go to www.jlcc.org and print out the application to mail in with a money order, or make an online credit card payment while there is still time.
