The Cirque Du Soleil returns to Corpus with Dralion

Sarah Meier/Staff Writer The “circus of the sun” Cirque du Soleil returns to Corpus next month with an East-West flair.  Performances for “Dralion” (pronounced draw-lee-on) will begin on March 9 at the American Bank Center and run through March 11, for a total of five shows. Dralion blends traditional Chinese acrobatics with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil to tell the story of Man and Nature and their battle to achieve harmony.  According to the Dralion website, the show’s name “is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West.” Taking…

Friday Science Seminar: The 2011 University Mars Rover Challenge

Brittni Young/Web Editor The Department of Natural Sciences will be hosting a Friday Science Seminar. Assistant Professor of Geology, W. Vernon Kramer will be presenting  The 2011 University Mars Rover Challenge. On June 2011, eight teams consisting of over 70 university students of all majors partook in the annual Mars Society Rover Challenge. The university students designed and built Mars rovers that were tested on Mars-like Terrain, near Hanksville, Utah to complete four tasks which included an astronaut “rescue”. One faculty member from each campus will be selected. Allan Berecka, the head coordinator of the event and Sara Kaplan, a creative writing teacher, are both published poets who will be featured in the showcase. Berecka grew up in Utica, New York where he lived in a strict catholic household.
