Randy Franco had no trouble behind the wheel of a big rig — until the sleet rolled in. Once the road got slick, and with little experience as a truck driver, it was only a matter of time before he wrecked. Fortunately for Franco, he was just in a truck driving simulator and wasn’t injured.
Del Mar College’s Transportation Training Services Program was at La Palmera mall Aug. 5-6 with one of their mobile simulators. Instructors provided those who were interested in getting behind the wheel of a big rig the opportunity to see what it would be like.
“It at least is giving me an idea of what I am looking at,” said Franco, a former Del Mar College employee of 10 years.
The program recently lowered its tuition for its Certified Driver License Class A truck driving course by $400, dropping the cost to $3,800.
Del Mar GED student Ruben Ortega hasn’t driven a truck in 14 years. He already has a CDL but wanted to get back into the classroom to touch up on some old skills.
“I thought about the refresher course wouldn’t count for anything, and it does. On my resume and application,” Ortega said.
