Del Mar College hosted the Corpus Christi Army Depot for an exclusive hiring event open only to graduates and current students.
Antonio Lopez, a welding major at Del Mar, was one of many students to attend.
“This was my first job interview experience,” Lopez said. “I spoke with Fred from the manufacturing processing and it was a great and inspiring event.”
Jennifer Gonzales, director of Career Development for Del Mar, set up the Sept. 13 event at Windward Campus after being approached by Rosa Callejo, chief of Workforce Management at the Army Depot.
“Del Mar College has built a close relationship with the CCAD over the last three years” Gonzales said.
The hiring event is not a traditional job fair. Only graduates and currently enrolled students were allowed to attend, and the CCAD was conducting interviews, had exclusive positions open and doing on-the-spot hiring.
“The CCAD believes that Del Mar students feature the skills and abilities to fill the positions that become available at the CCAD and that the hiring event is an attempt to see what opportunities can be opened for graduates and current Del Mar students,” Gonzales said.
Callejo, who has worked for CCAD for 34 years, said the depot has a long history of success with Del Mar students.
“The Army Depot has always hired a lot of Del Mar students in technical fields, such as electroplaters, non-destructive testers and aviation mechanics. But this is the first hiring event for any of the local colleges or universities and Del Mar was selected,” Callejo said.
Multiple job such as information technology and supply maintenance were available, giving students with any degree plan the opportunity to apply and interview in the sections they desired.
Depending on the overall success of the event, additional exclusive hiring events would be planned between Del Mar and CCAD for the spring and fall of 2024. Callejo recommends students “build a strong resume with all of their skills and experience and try their best at the interview process.”
